Estonian National Opera Premieres "Pulcinella"

"Pulcinella"

One-act ballet with songs by Igor Stravinsky
Music by Giovanni Battista Pergoles
World premiere May 15, 1920 at the Opéra de Paris

"Pulcinella" tells the story of a colorful commedia dell'arte character, the ring-necked Pulcinella, whose charming shamelessness helps her seduce other men's lovers and saves her from the most elaborate plans of revenge ...When the Russian Ballet troupe (Ballets Russes) director Sergei Diaghilev proposed to Igor Stravinsky to write a ballet based on the music and commedia dell'arte libretto of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736), which would also include a song, the composer thought that Diaghilev was not in his right mind. However, when he got acquainted with the musical material brought to him, which included the works of other lesser-known Italian composers, Stravinsky became enthralled. "I looked at the sheet music and fell in love!", admitted Stravinsky. The result was a gem that intertwines song and dance, Stravinsky's musical humor and Pablo Picasso's cubist design.
